How to Password Protect Wi-Fi on Your Smartphone: Step-by-Step Instructions for Android and iPhone

Your home Wi-Fi is like the front door to your apartment: if you leave it open, any neighbor or passerby can walk in as an uninvited guest. According to KasperskyMore than 30% of routers in Russia still use factory passwords or operate without protection at all. Meanwhile, by connecting to your network, attackers can not only "steal" traffic but also intercept personal data, infect devices with viruses, or use your IP address for illegal activities.

Luckily, you can set a Wi-Fi password directly from your smartphone—no computer or complicated steps required. In this article, we'll explain how to do it. Android And iPhone, which encryption types to choose, how to create a strong password, and what to do if access to your router is blocked. And also – why Using WPA3 instead of the outdated WPA2 reduces the risk of network hacking by 80%. (research data University of London for 2023).

Spoiler: the process will take no more than 10 minutes, even if you've never accessed your router settings before. The key is to follow the instructions and not skip any important steps.

Why is it important to protect your Wi-Fi with a password?

Many users mistakenly believe that if a network is "invisible" (hidden) or uses a complex router password, it's already secure. In practice, this isn't true. Here are the real risks of an unsecured network:

  • 🔴 Traffic theftNeighbors or random people will "sit" at your expense, slowing down your internet speed. This is especially noticeable in the evening, when the network is already overloaded.
  • 🔴 Data leak: via an unsecured connection, attackers can intercept logins/passwords from social networks, banks or email (for example, through an attack Man-in-the-Middle).
  • 🔴 Viruses and botnets: Your devices may be infected with malware that will mine cryptocurrency or send spam.
  • 🔴 Legal issues: If illegal actions are committed through your IP (for example, downloading pirated content), you will be held responsible.

According to data RoskomnadzorIn 2026, one in five cases of bank card fraud involved the victim connecting to an unsecured Wi-Fi network. Moreover, 60% of users are unaware their network has been hacked until they experience the consequences.

⚠️ Attention: if you use WEP encryption (obsolete standard), your network can be hacked for less than 5 minutes using free programs like Aircrack-ng. Even WPA2 with a simple password (for example, 12345678) is vulnerable to brute force attacks.

I use a complex password
Hiding the network name (SSID)
I don't defend it at all.
I don't know how to do this

What information is needed to set up a password?

Before you begin changing your password, please have the following information ready:

Data Where to find Example
Router IP address On the sticker on the back of the router or in the instructions. Most often, this is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. 192.168.8.1 (for routers TP-Link)
Login and password to access the control panel Also on the router sticker. Usually it's admin/admin or admin/password. user: admin
pass: 12345678
Network name (SSID) In the list of available networks on your smartphone or on the router sticker. KEENETIC-123 or Xiaomi_ABCD
Current Wi-Fi password (if any) If you haven’t changed it, look at the router sticker (field Wi-Fi Password or Key). 87654321

If you can't find the data on your router (for example, the sticker has worn off), try the standard combinations for your model:

  • 📌 TP-Link, D-Link, ASUS: login admin, password admin.
  • 📌 Zyxel Keenetic: login admin, password 1234 (or the last 8 characters of the MAC address).
  • 📌 Xiaomi, Huawei: login and password often coincide with the data for connecting to Wi-Fi.
⚠️ Attention: If you have previously changed the password for the router control panel and forgot it, you will have to do it factory reset (button Reset (on the back panel). After this, all network settings will be reset, including the Wi-Fi password.

How to password protect Wi-Fi via an Android smartphone?

On Android There are two main ways to change your Wi-Fi password: through browser (universal method) or through router manufacturer's application (more convenient, but not all brands support it). Let's look at both options.

Method 1: Via a browser (universal method)

This method works on any router, regardless of model. You only need a smartphone connected to the network you want to protect.

  1. Open your browser (Chrome, Samsung Internet etc.) and enter the router's IP address in the address bar (for example, 192.168.1.1). Click Go to.

  2. Enter your username and password to access the control panel (see the section above). If the information is correct, you will see the router's main menu.

  3. Find the Wi-Fi settings section. It's usually called:

    • Wireless / Wi-Fi (for English-language firmware),
    • Wireless network / Wi-Fi settings (for Russian speakers).

  • In the submenu Security (Security) select the encryption type:

    Which encryption should I choose?

    • 🔒 WPA3-Personal — the safest option (recommended). Supported by all modern devices (released after 2019).
    • 🔒 WPA2-PSK — an outdated but reliable standard. Choose this if you have older devices (pre-2018) that don't support WPA3.
    • WEP or Open networknever use! These standards are vulnerable to hacking.
    • end-->

    • In the field Password (Password) Enter a new password. Recommendations for creating a strong password are in the next section.

    • Save settings (button Save, Apply or Apply). The router will reboot and all devices will be disconnected from the network.
