How to recover your WiFi router password if you forgot it

Many users are familiar with the situation of urgently needing to connect a new device to the network but hopelessly forgetting the access key. This is not a critical system error, but a common scenario that can be easily resolved using several proven methods. The main thing is not to panic and act consistently to avoid disrupting the current network configuration.

There are many ways to regain access, from simply viewing saved data on a connected computer to a complete factory reset. The method you choose depends on whether you have physical access to the device and whether at least one Windows computer is connected to the network. We'll cover all the options in detail below.

Restoring access may take anywhere from one to ten minutes if you need to reconfigure your internet. It's important to understand the difference between a password and WiFi networks and the password for accessing the administrator's web interface. These details are often the same by default, but can be changed independently by the user.

Search for data on the router case and in the documentation

The easiest and fastest way to find the factory data is to inspect the bottom or back panel of your device. Manufacturers always place an information sticker with technical specifications there. This sticker contains the default login and password, which are valid until the user first changes the device.

If the sticker is worn off or missing, try to find the original box or instructions. This information is often duplicated on the warranty insert or on a separate sticker inside the package. Look for the following lines: Wireless Password, WPA Key or Pin.

  • 🏷️ Find the sticker on the bottom of the router that says SSID and Password.
  • 📦 Check the original packaging and paper instructions.
  • 🔍 Look for the QR code on the case - many modern models TP-Link And Keenetic allow you to read the password using your smartphone's camera.
⚠️ Note: If you previously changed the default password through the router settings, the information on the sticker will no longer work. In this case, the only solution is a factory reset or viewing the saved password on a connected PC.
What to do if the sticker is illegible?

If the factory label has worn off over time, try shining a flashlight on it at an acute angle. Sometimes the raised letters become visible. You can also search for your router model online and download the standard manual, which lists the standard factory combinations for that series of devices.

Viewing a saved password on a Windows computer

If a Windows desktop or laptop is already connected to your wireless network, recovering the key will take a couple of minutes. The operating system stores information about previously used networks in a special security registry. You don't need superuser privileges; desktop access is sufficient.

To get started, open the Start menu and go to "Settings," then select "Network & Internet." In the window that opens, find the "Network and Sharing Center" link or go directly to the network status. This displays your active connection, along with the name of your WiFi network.

Click on the name of the wireless network to open the status window. In the new dialog box, click the button Wireless network propertiesSwitch to the "Security" tab. The characters you're looking for are hidden here, in the "Network Security Key" field. Check the "Show entered characters" box, and the system will display the password in plain text.

This method works flawlessly on Windows 10 and Windows 11. If you have an older version of the system, the path may be slightly different, but the idea remains the same: access the wireless network adapter properties. Remember, you can only view the password for the network the computer is currently connected to or has previously connected to.

Using the command line to get the key

For advanced users or in cases where the graphical interface isn't working correctly, the command line is the ideal solution. This method allows you to retrieve not only the current password, but also the keys for all networks ever stored on your computer. You'll need a utility netsh, built into the system.

Launch Command Prompt as administrator. To do this, right-click the Start icon and select Command Prompt. Enter the following command to list all profiles: netsh wlan show profilesFind your network name in the list and copy it exactly, observing the case.

netsh wlan show profile name="Your_Network_Name" key=clear

After entering the command, the system will generate a detailed report. We're interested in the "Security settings" section. The "Key Content" line will contain the password you're looking for in cleartext. This is one of the most reliable methods, regardless of the driver version or router interface.

  • 💻 Launch CMD with administrator rights via Windows search.
  • 📝 Use the command netsh wlan show profiles for the list of networks.
  • 🔑 Enter the command with the profile name and parameter key=clear.

Please note that the network name in the command must be enclosed in quotation marks if it contains spaces. A typo of even one character will result in a "Group not found" message. Be careful when entering the data, especially if you are using a Russian keyboard layout for the network name.

Login to the router's web interface

If none of the previous methods work, try accessing the router settings through a browser. To do this, the device must be connected to the computer via a cable or WiFi (if you know the WiFi password but need the admin password, or vice versa). Enter the router's IP address in the browser's address bar.

The most common addresses are: 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.31.1The exact address is often listed on the same sticker as the password. After entering the address, a login form will appear. If you haven't changed your administrator login and password, try the standard combinations: admin/admin or admin/password.

Router brand Default IP address Login Password
TP-Link 192.168.0.1 admin admin
ASUS 192.168.1.1 admin admin
D-Link 192.168.0.1 admin (empty)
Xiaomi 192.168.31.1 admin WiFi password
Keenetic 192.168.1.1 admin 1234

Once inside, find the "Wireless" or "WiFi" section. There you'll find a field with the current security key. If the field is hidden by stars, you can often make it visible by clicking the eye icon next to it. You can also set a new password and save your changes here.

⚠️ Note: Router interfaces are constantly being updated. Menu locations may vary depending on the firmware version. If you can't find the item you need, consult the manufacturer's official documentation for your specific model.

Radical method: resetting the settings (Hard Reset)

If the password is lost, changed by the previous owner, and access to the web interface is blocked, the only option left is a hard reset. This will return the router to its out-of-the-box state. All user settings, including provider settings and the network name, will be deleted.

On the back of the device, locate the recessed button Reset or WPS/ResetTo activate reset mode, press it with a thin object (such as a paperclip or toothpick) and hold it for about 10-15 seconds. The indicators on the front panel should blink or turn off, indicating a reset.

After turning on, the router will create an open network with the default name. You'll need to connect to it and go through the internet setup process again. The WiFi password will be the one on the sticker. This is the only way to guarantee access if you don't know the previous settings.

It's important to understand that resetting your Wi-Fi settings will affect all other settings as well. If you have static IP addresses, port forwarding, or parental controls configured, you'll need to reconfigure them. Make sure you have your contract with your provider handy.

Common problems and their solutions

Even following the instructions, users may encounter difficulties. For example, the computer doesn't automatically obtain an IP address after connecting to the router. In this case, check the network adapter settings: they should be set to obtain IP and DNS automatically.

Another common issue is that the browser refuses to open the login page, displaying a security error. Try using incognito mode or a different browser. Also, make sure you're using the correct protocol. http://, and not https://, if the router certificate is not updated.

  • 🌐 Clear your browser cache if the settings page doesn't load.
  • 🔌 Use a LAN cable for setup to avoid connection interruptions.
  • 🔄 Make sure the network cable is working properly and the port indicators are lit.
⚠️ Note: If your router still doesn't connect to the internet after resetting it, the problem may be with your ISP. Some providers bind subscribers by MAC address. In this case, you'll need to clone the MAC address in your router settings or call technical support.

Preventing future password loss

To prevent this from happening again, it's recommended to save a backup copy of your configuration immediately after setup. Most routers have a "Save/Restore Settings" feature in their web interface. The configuration file will contain all passwords and settings.

It's also a good idea to write down important data in a safe place: a paper notepad, a secure file on your computer, or a password manager. Don't store passwords in text files on your desktop named "passwords.txt"—that's a prime target for viruses.

Update your router firmware regularly. This will not only improve stability but may also add new access control features, such as QR code authentication or a mobile app where the password is always visible.

Is it possible to recover a password if no computer is connected?

Unfortunately, without connecting at least one device to the router's network (via cable or WiFi) and knowing the administrator password, it's impossible to remotely find the password. This would be a security hole. The only solution is to reset the router using the Reset button.

What to do if the Reset button does not work?

If the button sticks or doesn't respond, try pressing it with the power off, then turn on the router while holding the button for 15-20 seconds. If this doesn't help, you may need to disassemble the device to short the contacts on the board, but this will void the warranty.

Will the WiFi password change after flashing the router?

Yes, if you perform a hard reset, the password will return to the factory default. If you simply update the firmware via the web interface without a reset, your current settings and passwords will remain.
