Forgot your home Wi-Fi password or want to update it for security? On routers Keenetic Changing your password takes just a few minutes if you know the right steps. These instructions are suitable for all modern models (Keenetic Giga, Ultra, Speedster, Viva and others), regardless of the firmware version. We'll cover two main methods: via the web interface and the mobile app. KeeneticWe'll also tell you what to do if you've forgotten your current control panel password.
Important: The manufacturer regularly updates their router interfaces, but the key steps remain the same. If your model was released before 2019, some menu items may have different names. In this case, use the settings search or refer to official documentation.
1. Preparation: What you need to change your password
Before you begin setting up, make sure you have:
- 🔌 Connecting to a router — via cable (recommended) or Wi-Fi. If you've already forgotten your network password, use a wired connection.
- 💻 Device with a browser — a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. For mobile devices, it's more convenient to use the official app. Keenetic.
- 🔐 Login and password for the control panel — by default it is
admin/admin, if you haven't changed them. If you forgot, read the section on resetting settings. - ⚡ Router power supply — Make sure it's plugged in and the indicators are steady. Avoid making changes during thunderstorms or when the power supply is unstable.
If you're connected to your router via Wi-Fi and are about to change the password, keep in mind that after saving the new settings, all devices will be disconnected from the network. Prepare a list of devices that will need to be reconnected (smartphones, smart speakers, TVs, etc.) in advance.
2. Method 1: Change your password via the web interface
This is a classic method that works on all models. Keenetic. Follow the instructions:
Open your browser and type in the address bar
192.168.1.1(ormy.keenetic.net, if DNS is working correctly). ClickEnter.Enter your username and password to access the control panel. If you haven't changed them, use the default credentials:
adminin both fields.Go to the section
Wi-Fi network(in new firmware it may be calledWireless networkorWi-Fi network).Select a tab
Access point(orMain network(for single-band models). Here you will see the current settings, including the network name (SSID) and security type.Find the field
Network key(orPassword) and enter a new password. We recommend using at least 12 characters with a combination of letters, numbers and special characters (for example,WiFi_Keenetic!2026).Click
Applyat the bottom of the page. The router will reboot, and all devices will be disconnected from Wi-Fi.
Advice: If you have a dual-band router (Keenetic Giga, Ultra etc.), you need to change the password separately for the networks 2.4 GHz And 5 GHz. They usually have different names (for example, Keenetic-24 And Keenetic-5).
The new password is written down in a safe place|All important devices are connected via cable (if necessary)|There are no unknown devices connected to the network|The router is not overheating (the indicators are lit steadily)-->
3. Method 2: Change your password via a mobile app
If you have the official app installed Keenetic (available for Android And iOS), the process is even simpler:
Open the app and wait for it to connect to the router. Make sure your smartphone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network (or use mobile data if the router supports remote management).
Go to the section
Wi-Fi(antenna icon in the bottom menu).Select your network (if there are several - for example, for
2.4 GHzAnd5 GHz).Tap on the field
Passwordand enter a new one. The app will show a real-time password strength rating.Save the changes by clicking the button
ReadyorApply.
The advantage of this method is a user-friendly interface and the ability to quickly share a new password via instant messengers (function Share password (available in the latest versions of the app). However, for initial setup, it's better to use the web interface—it offers more options.
What should I do if the app doesn't connect to the router?
If the application Keenetic your router is not detected, check:
1. Are you connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the router?
2. Is the remote control function enabled in the router settings (System → Keenetic Cloud).
3. Is the router firmware updated to the latest version (in the menu) System → Update).
4. Does the Internet work on other devices (possibly a problem with the provider).
If nothing helps, try reinstalling the application or using the web interface.
4. How to create a strong Wi-Fi password
Weak passwords are the main reason home networks are hacked. Follow these rules:
- 🔒 Length must be at least 12 characters — short passwords can be cracked in a few minutes.
- 🅰️ Combination of registers - use both uppercase and lowercase letters (for example,
KeEnEtIc2026). - 🔢 Numbers and special characters — add
!,@,#or$to make it more complicated. - 🚫 Avoid personal information — Do not use birth dates, pet names, or addresses.
- 🔄 Regular change — update your password every 3–6 months.
Important: Keenetic routers support the WPA3 security standard, which is more secure than WPA2. If your model supports it (check in the Wi-Fi settings), select WPA3-Personal or WPA2/WPA3 in the field Security type.
| Password type | Example | Security level | Hack time* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple (numbers only) | 12345678 |
❌ Very low | < 1 second |
| Vocabulary (common word) | password |
❌ Low | < 1 minute |
| Mixed (letters + numbers) | WiFiKeenetic24 |
⚠️ Average | From several days |
| Complex (letters, numbers, symbols) | K33n#t1c_W1F1!2026 |
✅ High | Years/Centuries |
*The estimated hacking time is based on brute-force attacks on an average home PC. Actual time depends on the attacker's hardware.
5. What to do if you forgot your control panel password
If you don’t remember your login or password to enter your router settings (192.168.1.1), there are two options:
Option 1: Factory reset
This is a radical method that will return your router to its out-of-the-box state. All your settings (including Wi-Fi passwords, port forwarding, and parental controls) will be lost.
Find the button on the back of the router.
Reset(usually it is recessed into the body).Take a paper clip or a toothpick and press and hold the button 10-15 secondsuntil the indicators start flashing.
Release the button and wait for the reboot (1-2 minutes).
Connect to the router via cable or to a Wi-Fi network with the name
Keenetic-XXXX(the default password is on the sticker below).
Option 2: Restore access without resetting
If you previously configured the router via the app Keenetic and linked it to your account, try:
Open the app on your smartphone.
Log in to your account Keenetic (If you forgot your data, restore it via email).
Select your router from the list of devices—the app will connect to it, bypassing the local password.
- Login: admin
- Password: admin, 1234 or keenetic (for older models).
If nothing works, the only option left is to reset.-->
6. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
When changing a password, users often encounter common problems. Here's how to solve them:
⚠️ Attention: If you lose internet access on all devices after changing your password, check to see if your ISP connection settings have been reset. Sometimes the router requires re-authorization (especially when using PPPoE).
- 🔴 "Unable to connect to 192.168.1.1" — Check that your device is connected to the router via cable or Wi-Fi. Disable any VPNs or proxies that may be blocking local IP addresses.
- 🔄 "The router doesn't save the new password." - update the firmware in the section
System → UpdateIf the problem persists, reset the settings. - 📶 "Wi-Fi works, but there's no internet." - reboot the router (using the power button or via the menu) and check the provider settings in the section
Internet. - 🔒 "I can't log in after reset" — Use the information on the sticker on your router. If it doesn't match, your router may have been previously configured by your provider (contact support).
If after changing the password some devices (for example, Smart TV or smart light bulbs) do not connect to Wi-Fi, try:
"Forget the network" on the problematic device and reconnect.
Temporarily disable MAC address filtering in the router settings (
Wi-Fi → MAC Filter).Make sure that the device supports the selected security type (for example, older gadgets may not work with
WPA3).
7. Additional security settings
Changing your password is just the first step to securing your network. We also recommend:
- 🔄 Disable WPS — This protocol is vulnerable to hacking. Find the option in
Wi-Fi → WPSand deactivate it. - 👤 Enable MAC address filtering - allow connection only to trusted devices (
Wi-Fi → MAC Filter). - 🌐 Hide network name (SSID) - turn off name broadcasting in
Wi-Fi → Access Point → Hide SSIDHowever, this may make connecting new devices more difficult. - 🛡️ Update firmware - Check back regularly for updates
System → UpdateThe manufacturer patches vulnerabilities in new versions. - 📡 Set up a guest network - create a separate network for guests with limited access to local resources (
Wi-Fi → Guest Network).
Warning: Hiding your SSID doesn't make your network invisible to experienced hackers—it's just an additional measure that makes it more difficult for casual users to connect. The primary protection is a strong password and modern encryption standards (WPA3).
8. How to check that the new password works
After changing your password, follow these steps to ensure your settings are correct:
Reboot the router through the menu
System → Restartor the power button.Try connecting to Wi-Fi from a new device (e.g. smartphone) using the new password.
Check your internet speed on the website
speedtest.net- it must correspond to the tariff.Make sure all important devices (smart speakers, cameras, laptops) are connected automatically or manually.
If something goes wrong:
- 🔍 Check that you haven't entered your password with a typo (case is important!).
- 🔄 Restart the problematic device (sometimes turning Wi-Fi on and off in the settings helps).
- 📱 On smartphones Android Try "forgetting the network" in your Wi-Fi settings and reconnecting.
⚠️ Attention: If your router starts rebooting frequently or losing internet connection after changing the password, the new firmware may contain bugs. Roll back to the previous version in the menu. System → Update → Update History.
FAQ: Answers to frequently asked questions
Is it possible to change the Wi-Fi password via SMS or by calling the provider?
No, your ISP doesn't have access to your router's settings. You can only change your Wi-Fi password through the control panel. Keenetic or a mobile app. However, if the router is rented from a provider (for example, Rostelecom or Beeline), its settings may be blocked - in this case, please contact support.
Why don't some devices connect after changing the password?
This is a common problem with older devices (printers, televisions, game consoles) that don't support modern encryption standards. Solutions:
- Try enabling compatibility with
WPA2instead ofWPA3. - Create a separate network for problematic devices with a simpler password (but don't use it for important data!).
- Update the firmware on your device (for example, on Smart TV).
How do I know who is connected to my Wi-Fi?
In the control panel Keenetic go to Devices (or Local Area Network → Clients). Here you'll see a list of all connected devices with their IP and MAC addresses. If you find an unknown device, change the Wi-Fi password and enable MAC address filtering.
Is it possible to set a password longer than 63 characters?
Technically routers Keenetic support passwords up to 63 characters, but we don't recommend using the maximum length. The optimal option is 12–20 characters with a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Passwords that are too long are difficult to enter on devices without a keyboard (for example, on Smart TV).
What should I do if my router has locked me out after several unsuccessful password attempts?
Keenetic It doesn't block access to the control panel after invalid attempts, but some providers may impose such restrictions. Solutions:
- Wait 5-10 minutes and try again.
- Reset the router using the button
Reset(if this is your personal device and not rented from a provider). - Contact your provider's support if the router is blocked on their side.
