Forgot your home Wi-Fi password or want to update it for security? On routers Keenetic (including models Omni, Giga, Ultra, Viva (and others) changing your password takes no more than 5 minutes—if you know the right algorithm. In this article, we'll look at three official methods: via the web interface and the mobile app. Keenetic and an emergency reset. We'll also tell you how to create a secure password to prevent your neighbors from hacking your network.
Important: The procedure is almost identical for all firmware versions. NDMS V2/V3 And KeeneticOS, but the menu item names may differ. If your router was released before 2018, the interface may look different—check the latest firmware version in System → Updates.
1. Preparing to change your password: what you need to know in advance
Before changing your password, make sure that:
- 🔌 Router Keenetic connected to the power supply and turned on (the power indicator is green or blue).
- 💻 You have a device (PC, laptop, smartphone) connected to the router's network via cable or Wi-Fi.
- 🔐 You know the current password for the web interface (by default it is
admin, if you haven't changed it). - 📱 If you are using the mobile app, it has been updated to the latest version (check in App Store or Google Play).
If you forgot your password for the web interface, you will have to do reset settings — we'll talk about this method at the end of the article. And if the router is rented from a provider (for example, Rostelecom or Beeline), changes to some parameters may be blocked - check this in the contract.
2. Method 1: Change your password via the web interface (the most secure)
This is a universal method that works on all models. KeeneticThe instructions are valid for firmware NDMS V3 And KeeneticOS:
- Open your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and enter in the address bar
192.168.1.1ormy.keenetic.net. ClickEnter. - Enter your login and password to log in (default -
admin/admin, if you haven't changed it). - Go to the section
Wi-Fi Network → Access Point(V KeeneticOS) orHome Network → Wi-Fi(V NDMS V3). - Find the field
Network key (password)orPasswordEnter a new password (see the next section for security recommendations). - Click
ApplyorSaveThe router will reboot automatically.
After changing the password, all devices will be disconnected from Wi-Fi. Please reconnect them using the new password.
Make sure your password is at least 8 characters long|
Check that WPA2/WPA3 (not WEP!) is enabled|
Write down your new password on paper or in a password manager|
Disable the guest network if not in use
-->
⚠️ Attention: If the router doesn't reboot after saving and Wi-Fi is gone, check to see if you've accidentally disabled the access point itself. Go to the settings again and make sure the checkbox is checked. Turn on the hotspot costs.
3. Method 2: Changing the password via the Keenetic mobile app
If you have the official app installed Keenetic (available for Android And iOS), the process is even simpler:
- Open the app and connect to your router (it should appear in the list of devices).
- Go to the section
Wi-Fi(antenna icon in the bottom menu). - Select your network (usually called
Keenetic-XXXX, where XXXX is a unique code). - Tap on the field
Passwordand enter a new one. The app will show a real-time password strength rating. - Save the changes. The router will update the settings in 10-20 seconds.
The advantage of this method is that you can change your password even without knowing the current one (if you've already logged into the app). However, some advanced settings (for example, choosing a standard WPA3) may not be available - you will have to use the web interface for them.
4. How to create a strong Wi-Fi password: 5 rules
Weak passwords are the main reason home networks are hacked. Follow these recommendations:
- 🔢 Length: At least 12 characters (15–20 is better). Short passwords can be cracked in a few minutes.
- 🎲 Complexity: use a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols (
!@#$%). Example:K33n3t1c_W1F1_2026!. - 🚫 Prohibited combinations: do not use birth dates, names, dictionary words or sequences (
12345678,qwerty). - 🔄 Update: Change your password every 3-6 months (set a reminder in your calendar).
- 📱 Storage: Don't save your password in plain text on your smartphone. Use password managers (KeePass, 1Password).
The KeeneticOS firmware includes a built-in password generator that creates random combinations with security in mind. You'll find it in the web interface next to the password entry field.
| Password type | Example | Time to crack (brute force) | Safety assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple (8 characters, numbers only) | 12345678 |
Less than 1 second | ❌ Dangerous |
| Medium (10 characters, letters + numbers) | Keenetic2026 |
2-3 days | ⚠️ Satisfactory |
| Complex (15 characters, mixed case + symbols) | K33n#W1f1_S3cur3! |
Millions of years | ✅ Excellent |
5. Method 3: Resetting the router settings (if you forgot the password)
If you can't log into the web interface or application, there is a radical method left - hard resetThis will reset the router to factory settings, including resetting the Wi-Fi password to the default value (indicated on the sticker on the bottom of the device).
Instructions:
- Find the button on the back of the router.
Reset(usually it is recessed into the body). - Take a paper clip or toothpick, press and hold the button for 10-15 seconds until the indicators start flashing.
- Release the button. The router will reboot (this will take 1–2 minutes).
- Connect to the Wi-Fi network named
Keenetic-XXXXand the password from the sticker. - Log in to the web interface (
192.168.1.1) with login/passwordadmin/adminand set up a new password.
⚠️ Attention: Reset deletes all settings, including:
- Provider settings (PPPoE, L2TP, IPTV).
- Forwarded ports and firewall rules.
- Guest network and parental controls.
If your router was configured by your ISP, you may need to reconfigure it after a reset. Please check with technical support.
What should I do if my router doesn't provide internet access after a reset?
If the Internet indicator is not lit or is red, check:
1. Is the provider's cable connected to the WAN port (usually highlighted in blue).
2. Do the connection type settings (PPPoE, DHCP) match your tariff?
3. Is there a MAC address blocking (some providers are bound to the router's MAC address).
If the problem persists, contact your ISP and let them know that you have reset the router to factory settings.
6. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
When changing a password, users often encounter typical problems. Let's look at the most common ones:
- 🔄 "Password not saved": Check if your browser is blocking pop-ups. Try using Chrome in incognito mode or another browser.
- 📶 "Wi-Fi disappeared after changing the password": Make sure you haven't disabled the access point in the settings. Restart the router using the power button.
- 🔒 "I can't log in to the web interface": If you have changed the IP address of your router, try entering it instead
192.168.1.1You can find out your current IP address via the command line (ipconfigon Windows). - 📱 "The phone won't connect to the new password": Remove the network from the saved ones on your device and reconnect. Android:
Settings → Wi-Fi → [your network] → Forget.
If the router gives an error "Invalid security key" When connecting devices, check:
- Is Wi-Fi mode enabled in the settings?
802.11r (Fast Transition)- it may conflict with older devices. - Isn't there a tick?
Hide SSID- if yes, the network will not be visible in the list of available ones.
7. Additional Wi-Fi security settings on Keenetic
In addition to changing your password, we recommend setting up:
- 🛡️ Encryption standard: select
WPA3-Personal(if supported by devices) orWPA2-PSK. Discard the outdatedWEP- it breaks in seconds. - 👥 Guest network: Create a separate network for guests with limited access to local resources. Setting up in
Wi-Fi Network → Guest Network. - ⏰ Wi-Fi Schedule: Turn off the network at night to save energy and improve security. Setting in
Wi-Fi Network → Schedule. - 📡 Signal strength: If the router is located in a small apartment, reduce the transmission power to 50-70%
Wi-Fi Network → AdvancedThis will reduce the load on the device and reduce the coverage area outside your home.
For advanced users: in KeeneticOS there is a function Protection against password guessing (in the section Security). It blocks devices after several unsuccessful connection attempts—useful against brute-force attacks.
FAQ: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to change the Wi-Fi password without accessing the router?
No. To change the password, you need access to the web interface, mobile app, or physical access to the router (to reset the settings). If you rent a router from a provider, you can sometimes change the password in your personal account on the operator's website—check with support.
How can I find out my current Wi-Fi password if I forgot it?
If you have a device that is already connected to this network (for example, a laptop), you can view the password:
- On Windows:
Start → Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks → [your network] → Properties → Show characters. - On MacOS: open Bunch of keys, find the network name and look at the password.
- On Android (with root rights): use the app WiFi Password Viewer.
If no devices are connected, the only option left is to reset the router.
Why don't some devices connect after changing the password?
The reasons may be different:
- The device does not support the selected encryption standard (for example,
WPA3does not work on older smartphones). Solution: go back toWPA2-PSK. - The password contains characters that are not recognized by the device (for example, Cyrillic or rare characters like
§). Solution: Use only Latin letters, numbers and standard symbols (!@#$%). - MAC address filtering is enabled on your router. Solution: Disable it.
Home Network → MAC Filter.
How to change the network name (SSID) along with the password?
The network name is changed in the same section as the password:
- In the web interface, go to
Wi-Fi Network → Access Point. - Find the field
Network name (SSID). - Enter a new name (do not use personal information!).
- Save your changes. All devices will be disconnected—please reconnect them.
Network name recommendations:
- Don't use standard names like
Keenetic-1234- this makes things easier for hackers. - Do not include information about the router model or provider in the name.
- You can use humor or neutral names, for example
FBI Surveillance Van #2.
What should I do if my Wi-Fi speed drops after changing my password?
Changing your password itself doesn't affect speed. But if you changed other settings at the same time (for example, the default 802.11 or channel width), this could affect performance. Check:
- In the section
Wi-Fi Network → Advancedthere must be a regime802.11a/n/ac(for 5 GHz) or802.11b/g/n(for 2.4 GHz). - Channel Width: For 5 GHz, select
80 MHz(if there is no interference), for 2.4 GHz -20 MHz(reduces interference from neighbors). - Channel: If a downloaded channel is manually selected, return to
Auto.
Also, reboot your router after making changes—sometimes this solves speed problems.
