Preparing to set up the network
Before changing security settings, ensure a stable connection between your computer or smartphone and the router. It's best to configure the settings using an Ethernet cable, connecting it to one of the yellow LAN ports on the device, as changing the Wi-Fi password will disconnect the wireless connection. If using a cable isn't possible, make sure your device is connected to the router's wireless network, the SSID of which is listed on the factory label.
You will also need to know the gateway IP address to access the control panel. For most models Mercusys, including MW301R, the standard address is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1This information is also duplicated on a sticker on the bottom of the case. Make sure your device is configured to obtain an IP address automatically (DHCP) to avoid address conflicts.
Prepare a piece of paper or a text file to write down your new login information. This is especially important if you plan to change not only your Wi-Fi password but also your system administrator credentials. Login to the router's web interface

⚠️ Note: If the default login/password pair doesn't work, the settings may have been previously changed. In this case, you'll need to reset the device to factory settings by holding down the button. Reset for 10-15 seconds with the power on.
After successful authorization, you'll be taken to the main status page, which displays the current network status, WAN connection type, and wireless information. This is where we'll navigate to the wireless network configuration sections. The interface is blue and white and features a side or top navigation menu, depending on the firmware version.

To change the password, go to the wireless network settings section. Find the item in the left-hand menu. Wireless (Wireless mode) and select the sub-item Wireless Security (Wireless Security). This is where the key traffic encryption parameters are located.
In the window that opens, you will see several security options. The most reliable and recommended standard today is WPA2-PSK (or WPA3(if your firmware version supports the latest protocols). Select this encryption type in the corresponding radio block. It's best to leave the encryption algorithm AES, as it provides the best compatibility and speed.
The main field we are interested in is called Wireless Password, PSK Password or simply PasswordYou'll need to enter a new password. Password requirements are typically as follows: 8 to 63 characters long, using Latin letters and numbers. Using Cyrillic characters may cause connection issues with some older devices.
Why not choose WEP?
The WEP encryption protocol is considered obsolete and can be cracked with specialized software in minutes. Always choose WPA2-PSK for maximum security.
Below is a field Wireless Network Name (SSID), where you can change the name of your network so it's easily identified in the list of available connections. After making all changes, be sure to click the button Save (Save) at the bottom of the page. Without this step, the new settings will not take effect.
Recommendations for creating a strong password
The security of your network directly depends on the complexity of the password you choose. Simple combinations like 12345678 or password Automatic cracking systems can crack them in seconds. To create a strong encryption key, it is recommended to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
Password length plays a critical role. A minimum of 8 characters is the absolute minimum, but for a home network, 12-16 characters is better. The longer the password, the longer it will take an attacker to brute-force it.

Avoid using your phone number, date of birth, or address as a password, as this information is often available on social media or can be guessed by people you know. Uniqueness Character strings are your main ally in protecting the network perimeter.
Save settings and reboot

It's also recommended to change the password for logging into the router's web interface to prevent guests from changing network settings, even with Wi-Fi access. Another useful feature is MAC address filtering. You can configure the router to accept connections only from specific, pre-defined devices. However, this requires manual configuration for each new device and can be inconvenient for large families or frequent guests.
Regularly check the list of connected clients in the section Wireless StatisticsIf you see an unfamiliar device there, this is a sign that your password may have been compromised and should be changed immediately. Also, remember to update your router's firmware if the manufacturer releases new versions with vulnerability fixes.
Using a guest network (if supported by your firmware version) will isolate visitors' devices from your main local network, where shared files or printers may be stored. This provides an additional layer of security for your personal data.
