How to change the password on an MGTS GPON router's Wi-Fi: A step-by-step guide

Changing your wireless network password is a basic security procedure every home internet owner should be able to perform. Users often need to restrict access to their network if they notice suspicious activity or simply after reinstalling their equipment. For MGTS and their GPON fiber optic terminals, this process has its own specifics, depending on the device model.

The default factory passwords found on the bottom of the router are often too simple or already known to a wide range of people, especially if the device was issued in large numbers. Wireless Interface Security This is your home network's first line of defense against unauthorized access. Ignoring this step can lead not only to traffic theft but also to attackers gaining access to local resources, such as network storage or security cameras.

In this guide, we'll detail the steps for the most common terminal models installed by operators. We'll cover the web interfaces of devices from Huawei, Sercomm, and Eltex, as these are the most common in our subscriber base. Understanding the menu structure will allow you to quickly make the necessary changes without calling a technician.

Determining the terminal model and access

Before changing settings, you need to accurately identify your installed equipment. MGTS regularly updates its inventory of devices, and the control interface can vary significantly depending on the vendor. Model information is usually found on a sticker located on the bottom or back panel of the device. You'll need to locate the marking, which often looks like this: Huawei HG8245H, Sercomm S1010 or Eltex NTU-RG-1402G-W.

To access the control panel, you need to know the IP address of the default gateway. In the vast majority of cases, MGTS equipment uses the standard address. 192.168.100.1However, some Sercomm models may use the address 192.168.1.1The login and password for authorization are also individual and indicated on the same sticker as the model. Standard credentials are often a combination admin and a unique code, or root And admin.

It's important to understand that access to full functionality may be restricted by your provider. In some cases, the default user password does not allow you to change Wi-Fi settings. To obtain full administrator rights on MGTS GPON terminals, it is often necessary to use a super password, which is different from the user password. If the normal data from the sticker does not allow you to save changes, this means that elevated privileges are required.

⚠️ Note: Web configurator interfaces can be updated remotely by the provider. If the menu items described below are missing, your firmware version may have a modified structure.

Preparing to set up the network

Before making any changes to your router configuration, you must ensure a stable connection to the device. It's best to configure the settings by connecting your computer to the router via Ethernet cableThis eliminates the risk of connection loss while saving settings, which is especially important when changing the Wi-Fi password and the wireless connection is temporarily interrupted.

If using a cable isn't possible, make sure your mobile device or laptop is connected to the current Wi-Fi network whose password you plan to change. Open any modern web browser. Enter the router's IP address in the address bar. Please note: enter the address in the path bar, not in the search field.

After visiting the address, the system will request authorization. Enter your username and password. If you previously changed these details and forgot them, you will need to perform a factory reset, which will require you to reconfigure all connection settings. Save your current settings in a safe place before experimenting.

Changing the password on Huawei routers

Huawei equipment is among the most widely used in GPON networks. The interface of these devices is generally logical and structured. After successfully logging into the web interface (usually at 192.168.100.1), go to the top menu and select the tab. WLANIn some firmware versions this section may be called Network -> WLAN.

In the menu that opens, find the subsection WLAN Basic Configuration or WLAN SecurityThis is where the key wireless network settings are located. In the field WLAN SSID The name of your network is displayed, visible to surrounding devices. Below is a field for entering the password, which may be called WPA PreSharedKey, Passphrase or simply Key. Enter a new combination of characters there.

Pay special attention to the encryption type. It is recommended to select the mode WPA2-PSK or WPA/WPA2-PSK with encryption algorithm AESUsing an outdated protocol WEP or TKIP makes your network vulnerable to hacking in minutes. After entering the new password, be sure to click the button Apply or Save at the bottom of the page for the changes to take effect.

What should I do if the Apply button is grayed out?

If the password entry field is active but the save button won't click, try changing the encryption type to a different one and then back to the desired one. This sometimes unlocks the interface on older Huawei firmware versions.

Setting up Wi-Fi on Sercomm terminals

Sercomm routers, commonly found in MGTS's equipment line, have their own unique interface, which may differ from the familiar Huawei standard. After logging in at 192.168.1.1 (or another one indicated on the sticker), look for the tab with the name Setup or Settings. In the left or top menu, select the item Wireless or Wi-Fi.

In the section Security Settings or WPA-PSK You'll find a field for changing the security key. Sercomm interfaces often have separate settings for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. This means you may need to change the password twice: first for the 2.4 GHz band, then switch to the 5 GHz tab and repeat the process. This ensures a uniform security policy for all bands.

When creating a new password, the system may require certain password complexity rules, including the inclusion of capital letters, numbers, and special characters. Don't ignore these requirements, as they directly impact the strength of the encryption. After filling in all the fields, click the button. Save SettingsThe device may reboot the wireless module, which will cause a brief connection loss.

Eltex Equipment Manual

Eltex terminals are Russian-made equipment that has been actively deployed in the MGTS network in recent years. The web interface of these devices is more streamlined and functional. To access Wi-Fi settings after logging in, go to the menu. Network and select WLAN. Next you are interested in the point Security or WLAN Security.

Here you will see a table or list of security profiles. Select the active profile (usually it is marked as Profile 1 or has the status Enabled). In the field Pre-Shared Key Enter a new password. A key feature of Eltex is the ability to fine-tune periodic key changes, but for home use, a static password is sufficient.

Don't forget to check your SSID settings. Unlike some other vendors, Eltex allows for flexible configuration of guest networks. Make sure you're editing the main network settings, not the guest profile, unless you're specifically changing access for guests. After making changes, click Submit or Apply.

Table of standard access parameters

For your convenience, below is a summary table of the most common default settings for equipment used by your provider. This information may be required for initial login or access recovery.

Router model IP address Login Password
Huawei HG8245H 192.168.100.1 root admin
Sercomm S1010 192.168.1.1 admin admin
Eltex NTU-RG-1402G 192.168.100.1 admin admin
ZTE F660 192.168.1.1 admin admin

⚠️ Note: The data in the table is valid for the default factory settings. If your provider has remotely reconfigured your device, the passwords may have been changed to the unique ones found on the sticker on your device.

Common problems and their solutions

Users may encounter various difficulties during the setup process. One of the most common issues is that the device doesn't accept the new password. This is often due to the password being shorter than the required minimum (usually 8 characters) or using invalid characters. Ensure your keyboard layout supports the Latin alphabet, as Russian letters in the Wi-Fi password may be processed incorrectly by some clients.

Another common situation is that devices stop connecting after changing the password. This is normal behavior: all devices must re-authorize with the new key. If the connection fails, try selecting the "Forget Network" option for your SSID on your phone or laptop, then reconnect using the new password.

If you changed the settings, but after some time they were reset to the old ones, this may mean that the provider uses a remote management system. TR-069In this case, the provider's server automatically reverts the settings to default values. To resolve this issue, you may need to disable remote management in the Maintenance or Administration, however, this action may be regarded by the provider as a breach of contract.

Password strength requirements

The security of your home network directly depends on the complexity of your password. Simple combinations like "12345678" or "password" are cracked by automated tools in a split second. It is recommended to use a password of at least 12-15 characters. It should contain upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters.

Avoid using personal information such as birthdates, phone numbers, or pet names. Such information is often available on social media and can be exploited through social engineering. The ideal password is a random string of characters with no logical connection.

Changing your password regularly, for example, every six months, is also a good security practice. This minimizes the risk of your key being compromised without your knowledge. Use password generators to create truly strong combinations.

What should I do if I forgot my new Wi-Fi password?

If you've changed your password and forgotten it, but have a computer connected to the router via cable, you can log back into the router's web interface. In the WLAN settings section, the password is often displayed as dots. Click the "eye" icon or uncheck "Hide" to view it in plain text. If you can't access it via cable, you'll need to reset the router using the Reset button.

Does changing your password affect your internet speed?

Changing your password itself doesn't affect speed. However, if you simultaneously change the encryption type (for example, from WPA2 to WPA3) or the broadcast channel, this may affect compatibility with older devices or the level of interference, which will indirectly impact speed. It's recommended to keep the encryption type set to WPA2-PSK (AES) for maximum compatibility.

Is it possible to set an image instead of the network name?

No, the Wi-Fi protocol standard does not support using images as network names (SSIDs). An SSID is a text string. You can use special characters or emoji in the name if your router supports UTF-8 encoding, but graphic images cannot be transmitted via the network name.
