It's common for a desktop computer to have a network card but no built-in wireless module. Running a cable through the entire apartment or buying a separate USB adapter isn't always convenient or cost-effective.
Luckily, older routers like D-Link DIR-300, can work not only as transmitters but also as signal receivers. This allows them to be used as a powerful external Wi-Fi adapter, connected to a PC via an Ethernet cable.
In this guide, we'll walk you through the detailed process of transforming a router into a client device. You'll learn how to properly change the operating mode, configure security settings, and ensure a stable connection between your computer and your primary wireless network.
Equipment preparation and compatibility testing
Before you begin, make sure your device model supports the required functionality. Not all revisions D-Link DIR-300 (especially older versions of NRU) have a "Client" mode in the firmware.
To complete the setup, you'll need the router itself, a computer with a network card, and a patch cord. It's also a good idea to have internet access from another device to test the setup results.
⚠️ Attention: If you have a model with the NRU index, make sure that the firmware version is not lower than 1.30, as earlier versions may have limited functionality.
It's important to understand the difference between the modes. We need exactly Client Mode (Client), not WDS or Bridge, if we want the router to simply transmit the Internet to the PC without creating its own subnet.
Reset settings and enter the control panel
It's best to start with a clean slate. This will prevent IP address conflicts and old routing rules. Locate the hole on the back panel. Reset.
Press the button with a thin object and hold it for about 10 seconds until the indicators flash simultaneously. After this, the device will reboot to factory settings.
Connect your computer to any LAN port on the router using a cable. Open your browser and enter the standard address in the address bar:
192.168.0.1
In the authorization window that appears, use the standard login details. admin, leave the password field blank (or also enter admin, if the system requires).
What to do if 192.168.0.1 does not open?
Check your PC's network card settings. It should receive an IP address automatically via DHCP. If the router's address was previously changed, you may need to reset it to factory settings using the Reset button.
Selecting the device operating mode
After successfully logging into the web interface, proceed to the main setup process. The interface may differ depending on the firmware version, but the logic remains the same.
In the menu on the left or at the top of the screen, find the section System or ModeNew D-Link firmware often features a separate "Operation Mode" option.
In the list that opens, select the option Client (Client). Some firmware versions may call this "Wireless Client" or "Wi-Fi Client".
After selecting the mode, click "Apply" or "Save." The router will warn you that a reboot is required. Accept and wait for the device to power on.
☑️ Check before changing the mode
Setting up a wireless connection**
After rebooting, the device will enter network search mode. Log in to the control panel again (the address may change if the main router assigns a new IP address, but most often the web interface remains accessible at 192.168.0.1).
Go to the section Wi-Fi -> Connection (or "List of available networks"). Here you'll see a table with detected wireless networks within range.
| Parameter | Meaning | Description |
|---|---|---|
| SSID | Network name | The name of your primary access point |
| Security | WPA2-PSK | Encryption type (usually the default) |
| Signal | % (Percent) | Signal level from the main router |
| Channel | Auto / 1-13 | The channel on which the network operates |
Select the desired network from the list. If your network isn't listed, click "Refresh" or "Scan." Make sure you're close enough to the signal source.
In the "Encryption Key" field, enter the password for your primary WiFi network. Click "Connect." If all the information is correct, the wireless indicator on the DIR-300 should light up or start blinking.
Setting up a local network and IP addresses
Now you need to configure the LAN interface so the computer can access the internet correctly. By default, the DIR-300 in client mode may attempt to act as a DHCP server, which will cause a conflict.
Go to the section Net -> LANHere you need to change the IP address of the router itself so that it is not the same as the default gateway address, but is in the same subnet.
For example, if the main router has the address 192.168.1.1, then set the address to DIR-300 192.168.1.2 (or any free one except .1 and .255).
⚠️ Note: After changing your IP address, access to the DIR-300 settings will be through the new address. Be sure to save the new information.
Also important in this section disable DHCP serverThe main router should be responsible for distributing addresses, while the DIR-300 in client mode should simply relay traffic.
Save the settings. The device will reboot again. After powering on, the computer connected via cable should receive an IP address from the main network and be able to access the internet.
Diagnostics and troubleshooting
If the internet connection isn't available, check the connection status in the DIR-300 web interface. The "Status" section should show "Connected" and the IP address received from the main router.
A common issue is mismatched encryption types. Make sure both devices are set to WPA2-PSK and the algorithm is used AESOld algorithm TKIP may work unstably.
Try temporarily disabling your antivirus or firewall software on your computer to prevent software from blocking the connection.
Speed and stability optimization
For maximum speed, we recommend locking the wireless channel. If the main router is set to "Auto," it may change channels, which will cause the connection with the DIR-300 to be lost.
Go to your main router's settings and set the channel (e.g., 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz). Then, in the DIR-300 settings, also set this specific channel in client mode.
Place the DIR-300 in a strong reception area. The antennas should point vertically upward. Avoid placing it near microwaves and Bluetooth devices.
If the speed is still low, check if power saving mode is enabled in the client's WiFi settings. It's also a good idea to update the firmware to the latest official version from the manufacturer's website.
Can DIR-300 be used as a repeater?
Technically, client and repeater modes are similar, but in repeater mode, the router creates its own copy of the network (often with the _EXT prefix), while in client mode, it simply provides internet access via a cable. The DIR-300 with stock firmware most often functions as a client for a wired PC connection.
What to do if you forgot the password for your main WiFi?
In client mode, you won't be able to connect without the key. You'll have to connect to the main router from your phone or laptop, look up the password in the network properties, or reset the main router and set it up again.
What is the internet speed via DIR-300?
The speed will be limited by the capabilities of the DIR-300 wireless module (typically up to 150 Mbps under ideal conditions for the N standard) and the signal strength. The actual speed via cable to a PC will be approximately 40-60 Mbps with a good signal.
