How to find the Wi-Fi password on a D-Link router: all the methods

Forgot your home Wi-Fi password and need to connect from a new device? With routers D-Link There are several ways to restore network access—most of which don't require a factory reset or a call to your ISP. In this article, we'll cover all the current methods: from viewing the data on the case's sticker to extracting the password from a configuration backup.

It is important to understand that the process may differ slightly depending on router models (For example, DIR-300, DIR-615, DIR-825 or newer series COVR) and firmware version. However, the general logic remains the same: the password is stored either in the device's web interface or in configuration files. If you've never changed the factory settings, the chances of quickly retrieving the data are extremely high.

Before you begin, make sure you have physical access to the router—some methods require a cable connection or pressing buttons on the router. Also, prepare a device (PC, laptop, or smartphone) that is already connected to the Wi-Fi network or can connect via Ethernet.

1. The password on the router sticker is the fastest way

If you have never changed your Wi-Fi factory settings, the password can be found on sticker, located on the bottom or back panel of the router. It is usually listed next to the network name (SSID) in the field Wi-Fi Password, Network Key or Pre-Shared Key.

This is what a typical sticker looks like on models D-Link DIR-615 or DIR-825:

  • 📌 SSID (network name): DLink-XXXX or dlink-1234 (where XXXX are unique characters)
  • 🔑 Password (Key): a combination of 8-12 characters (numbers, letters, sometimes hyphens)
  • 🖧 MAC address and serial number (useful for contacting support)

⚠️ Attention: If you changed your password through the web interface, the information on the sticker is out of date. In this case, proceed to the next section.

2. View the password through the router's web interface

The most reliable way is to log in admin panel router. To do this:

  1. Connect to the router via cable (recommended) or Wi-Fi (if you remember the password for another network on this device).
  2. Open your browser and type in the address bar 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (for most models D-Link).
  3. Enter your username and password to log in. By default, this is usually:
    • 👤 Login: admin
    • 🔐 Password: admin or an empty field (depending on the model)

If the standard data does not suit you, try combinations from the table:

Router model Login Default password
DIR-300, DIR-615 admin admin or empty
DIR-825, DIR-850L admin admin or password
COVR-X1860, COVR-1862 admin Empty field
DWR-921 (4G router) admin admin or 1234

After successfully logging in, go to the Wi-Fi settings section. The path may vary, but it's usually:

  • 📡 Wi-Fi → Basic Settings (or Wireless → Basic Settings)
  • 🔒 Security → Wi-Fi Security Settings (or Security → Wireless Security)

Look for the field PSK password, Network Key or Pre-Shared KeyThe password may be hidden behind asterisks—in this case:

  • 🖱️ Right-click on the password field → View code (in Chrome/Firefox browser).
  • 🔍 Find the line with in the HTML code type="password" and replace it with type="text".
  • 🔄 Refresh the page - the password will become visible.

Connect to the router via cable or Wi-Fi|

Open your browser and enter 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1|

Try login/password admin/admin|

If it doesn't work, check the combinations from the table above-->

For modern models (for example, series COVR or EXO) It's more convenient to use the official app D-Link Wi-Fi (available for Android And iOS). It allows you to manage your network without entering an IP address and administrator password.

Instructions:

  1. Download the app from Google Play or App Store.
  2. Connect your smartphone to the router's Wi-Fi network (even if you don't know the password, you can use a cable via an OTG adapter).
  3. Launch the app and follow the setup wizard. The system will automatically find your router.
  4. Go to the section Wi-Fi → Security Settings.

⚠️ Attention: The application does not work with all older models (for example, DIR-300 or DIR-615). If your router is not detected, use the web interface.

What should I do if the app doesn't see the router?

Make sure your smartphone is connected to the router's network (not to mobile Internet).

Check if your model supports the app (a list of compatible devices is available on the D-Link website).

Please reboot your router and try again.

If nothing helps, use the web interface (section 2).

4. Extracting the password from the configuration backup

If you previously saved your router settings to a file (for example, when updating the firmware), you can extract the password from it. The configuration file has the extension .conf or .bin.

To do this:

  1. Download the backup copy from the section System → Backup in the web interface.
  2. Open the file in a text editor (for example, Notepad++ or VS Code).
  3. Find the lines with WPA-PSK or Passphrase — your password will be next to it.

Important: The password in the configuration file may be encrypted. In this case, it cannot be recovered without special tools.

Example of a configuration file fragment:

wl0_ssid=MyWiFiNetwork

wl0_wpa_psk=12345678

wl0_security_mode=wpa2-personal

Here wl0_wpa_psk - this is the Wi-Fi password.

5. Resetting the router to factory settings (extreme case)

If none of the methods worked, there remains reset the router Factory reset. This will reset the password to the value on the sticker, but will also delete all user settings (including port forwarding, parental controls, etc.).

How to reset:

  1. Find the button on the back of the router. Reset (usually recessed into the body).
  2. Take a paper clip or a toothpick, press and hold the button for 10-15 seconds.
  3. Wait for the reboot (the indicators should blink and light up in standard mode).

⚠️ Attention: After the reset, you'll need to reconfigure your internet connection (enter your ISP details). If you're unsure of your settings, contact your ISP's technical support.

6. Alternative methods (for advanced users)

If you have access to a device that is already connected to the router's Wi-Fi network, you can retrieve the password through its settings:

  • 🖥️ Windows:
    1. Open Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center.
    2. Click on the name of your network → Wireless network properties.
    3. Go to the tab Security and check the box Show entered characters.
  • 📱 Android:
    1. Install the application WiFi Password Viewer (root rights required).
    2. Open the list of saved networks and find yours. SSID.
  • 🍎 MacOS:
    1. Open Terminal and enter:
      security find-generic-password -wa "NETWORK_NAME"
    2. Enter your Mac account password and the system will display your Wi-Fi password.
  • ⚠️ Attention: On iPhone It is impossible to extract a Wi-Fi password without jailbreaking—Apple does not provide such a function.

Is it possible to find out a Wi-Fi password without accessing the router?

No. The password is stored only in the router's memory or on devices that have previously connected to the network. If you don't have access to the router or connected devices, it's impossible to recover the password—you'll have to reset the settings.

I changed my router administrator password and forgot it. What should I do?

The only way is to reset the router to factory settings (button Reset). After this, the login and password will become standard (admin/admin or empty).

The sticker has an 8-digit password, but when I connect it says "Incorrect password." Why?

You or someone else likely changed your password through the web interface. In this case, the information on the sticker is out of date. Use the methods in sections 2–4 to find the current password.

Is it possible to connect to a router via Wi-Fi without a password?

Yes, if it is enabled on the router WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). Click the button WPS on the router body, and then select the WPS connection on your device. This method only works if the feature isn't disabled in the settings.

How to protect your Wi-Fi password in the future?

Save it in a password manager (eg. KeePass or 1Password), print it out and store it in a safe place, or make a backup copy of your router settings (section System → Backup).
